A Moment of Challenge
You’re driving home from work on a typical Tuesday evening when you notice a young woman sitting alone by the side of the road, her baby carriage abandoned next to her. She looks scared and disheveled, and your initial instinct is to stop and help. But then you remember all the news stories about people getting hurt or even killed while trying to intervene in similar situations.
The Discovery
As I reflect on my own experiences growing up with a mother who was involved in some shady dealings, I realize how easy it is to fall into a trap of thinking we’re helping someone when really we’re putting ourselves at risk. Honeytrapping, help baiting, and guilt baiting are all tactics used by criminals to lure people into situations that can put them in harm’s way.
I remember one instance where my mother convinced me to go with her to an abandoned building to “rescue” a young woman who was supposedly being held against her will. Looking back, it was just a setup to get us involved in something bad. I was lucky to have escaped unscathed, but the memory still sends shivers down my spine.
A New Way Forward
So, what can we do instead? When you see someone in distress, don’t panic. Take a moment to assess the situation and prioritize your own safety. If it’s a medical emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately. But if it’s not life-threatening, try to find a safe way to help without putting yourself at risk.
For example, you can drive past the person in distress and call for help from a safe distance. This might seem counterintuitive, but trust me, it’s often the best course of action. If someone is willing to wait with you in a well-lit public space for the police to arrive, that’s usually a sign they’re not being coerced into staying.
Take the Leap
So, what can you do today? Start by educating yourself on how to spot potential honeytraps or help baiting situations. Talk to someone who’s been through a similar experience, like an older person who grew up in a tough neighborhood. And remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to helping someone you don’t know well.
Inspiration Point: You have the power to make a difference without putting yourself at risk. By being aware of these tactics and taking the safe route, you can help create a safer community for everyone.
